General Assistance is an income assistance program for the disabled and for dependent children who do not qualify for NMW, SSI, or other similar programs. It is for New Mexico residents who are U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens.

General Assistance is for individuals and families with few resources and low income. You may have liquid resources (cash, bank accounts, etc.) worth up to $1,500 and non-liquid resources (land and structures, including mobile homes) up to $2,000. Income limits are 85% of the federal poverty guidelines.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DISABLED
General Assistance for adults who are disabled is intended for individuals 18 or older or emancipated minor pregnant women who are unable to be gainfully employed because of a time-limited, temporary or permanent disability.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DEPENDENT CHILDREN
General Assistance for dependent children is intended for individuals who are 17 or younger, 18 year olds who are enrolled in high school, or 18-22 year olds who are receiving special education services regulated by the public education department (PED).
