TANF is for families whose incomes and resources are not enough to meet the basic needs of their children. Total countable resources (cash, savings, etc.) cannot be greater than $3500 per benefit group. Income limits depend on the number of people in your benefit group. Tribal TANF programs may have different financial eligibility rules.

Most people must work to be eligible for TANF. Some people, such as the disabled and seniors, are given a participation waiver and do not have to work to qualify. Children and unmarried minor teen parents must meet school attendance requirements. Work and school requirements may differ for tribal TANF programs.
