Ø Head Start and Early Head Start are free early childhood preschool programs for pregnant women and children from 6 weeks to age 5. The goal of these programs is to help children from low-income families get a healthy start and become ready for school. Head Start offers an age appropriate curriculum. Both programs give children and their families a wide range of educational and social services. Head Start is a free preschool program for 3-5 year old children from low-income families. Early Head Start serves pregnant women, infants, and toddlers.
The Head Start program is for children between 3 and 5 years of age whose families are low income. Early Head Start is for low-income pregnant women, infants, and toddlers. You must live in your program's service area.
You and your child will be offered a wide variety of services to help your child's social, physical, and educational development. These include health and dental exams, vision, hearing and developmental screenings, nutrition counseling, safety education, play groups, and structured educational activities. If you are pregnant, you will be offered parenting training and referrals to health and social services. Head Start / Early Head Start staff members will try to help your family in any way they can.
Communities throughout New Mexico offer Head Start and Early Head Start programs. To apply, you should call the local program in your community. You may use the national Head Start Program Search Tool or call the Head Start Information and Publication Center toll-free at 1-866-763-6481 to find a program in your area. A Head Start / Early Head Start staff member will set up a home visit with you. During the home visit, you will need to fill out an application and show your child's birth certificate, immunization record, and proof of income.
