What is income-eligible child care?

Income-eligible child care is child care provided at a reduced cost to low-income families in New Mexico who are working or in an education or job training program, or who are headed by a teen parent. Child care is provided for children under 13 (or older with special needs). The program is funded by state and federal funds and administered by the Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) Childcare Services Bureau.

Income-eligible families may choose the type of child care that is best for their child. A child care resource and referral agency will help you find a suitable child care provider. Families need to select a child care facility before applying for a placement agreement.

Depending on where you live, you may be placed on a waiting list until there is an available opening.

What are child care resource and referral agencies (CCR&Rs)?

Child care resource and referral agencies are organizations that work with the CYFD Child Care Services Bureau to help families find safe, affordable child care and to offer training and technical assistance to child care providers. Some of the things CCR&Rs do are:

  • provide information about different types of child care
  • offer advice on what to look for when choosing a child care provider
  • help families find a child care provider in their area
  • help families get financial assistance for child care
  • provide training for child care providers
  • maintain toy lending libraries

What is the Child and Adult Food program?

The Child and Adult Food program received money from the federal government and is managed by the Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) Family Nutrition Bureau. Eligible child care centers and homes receive monetary reimbursements for qualifying children when they serve nutritious meals and snacks that follow the USDA meal pattern requirements. This program helps ensure healthy eating habits in children that will benefit them the rest of their lives.

Who can participate in the Child and Adult Food program?

  • Anyone who is approved to care for children in their home and provides them with meals and snacks.
  • Child care centers with a 501(c)(3) designation.
  • Child care centers operated by a governmental organization.
  • Proprietary centers that meet eligibility requirements.

Family day care home providers must sign up with a Child and Adult Care Food Program sponsoring organization.
