TAX HELP New Mexico

You can get free help with your tax return at CNM's TAX HELP New Mexico volunteer sites in your community across New Mexico. TAX HELP sites are open during the tax season, usually from January through April.

To find a TAX HELP site, read more about the program at our NewMexicoResources.org link, or go directly to the TAX HELP location list maintained by Central New Mexico Community College.

If you go to a TAX HELP site, be prepared by bringing your and your family's social security cards, birthdates, wage statements, child care provider statement for any wages paid during the year, list of itemized deductible expenses, Form SSA-1099 for Social Security benefits, and record of any other income received.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites

You can get free help with your tax return at a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site in your community. VITA sites are located in community centers, libraries, churches, shopping malls, retirement homes, and similar locations.

VITA sites are open during the tax season, usually from January through April.

To find a VITA site, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

At most VITA sites, you can electronically file ("e-file") your tax return for free. Electronic filing usually speeds up the processing time of your tax return. You will get a tax refund payment more quickly if you e-file than if you send in a paper tax return.

If you go to a VITA site, you should bring identification, tax records, and financial statements that the tax volunteer will need to help you with your tax return. For a list of items to bring, see Free Tax Return Preparation: Items you need to bring on the IRS web site.

Internal Revenue Service

The IRS will calculate the amount of Earned Income Credit you may claim if you ask them to do so. You can find specific instructions on how to have the IRS compute the EIC for you in 2009 Publication 967: The IRS Will Figure Your Tax. on the IRS web site.

For tax year 2009 forms, these instructions tell you to do the following:

  • For Form 1040EZ, print "EIC" in the space to the left of line 9a.

  • For Form 1040A, print "EIC" in the space to the left of line 41a.

  • For Form 1040, print "EIC" on the dotted line to the left of line 64a.

Then, do not fill in any lines on the form you use that relate to your total payments, overpayment, refund, or amount of tax you might owe. The IRS will calculate the EIC amount and then compute the other figures, once this amount is determined.

If you have a qualifying child, you must fill in Schedule EIC (Earned Income Credit) and submit it with your tax return.
