Energy assistance, also known as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), is a government program to help low-income families and individuals pay their home heating and cooling bills. The program also offers crisis intervention services for people needing immediate help with fuel delivery or utility service.
Energy assistance is for low-income tenants and homeowners with energy expenses, and eligibility is based on household gross annual income. If you rent, you may receive assistance even if your heat is included in the rent.
The amount of your LIHEAP benefit depends on your income, your energy costs, and whether your household includes young children, seniors, or disabled members. You may also be eligible for weatherization services.
You should apply for energy assistance at your local New Mexico Income Support Division (ISD) county office or an outreach location. See the ISD county office listing for the office that serves your community. Applications are processed from October 1 through August 31 each year. Funding may be limited, so it is best to apply early in the program year. You will need documentation of your income and energy costs when you apply.
