Unemployment Insurance

An Overview

What is unemployment insurance (UI)?

Unemployment insurance is a government program that gives temporary cash payments to workers who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions (NMDWS) is in charge of this program in New Mexico.

Am I eligible?

Most New Mexico workers who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own are covered by unemployment insurance. You are not eligible if you were fired from your job for a good reason, or if you quit your job by your own choice. To get benefits, you must be looking for a job or taking part in an approved job training program. You may get partial benefits if you work part-time while looking for a new full-time job .

What benefits will I get?

In most cases, you can get cash payments for a maximum of 26 weeks. At times, the federal government offers an extension of these benefits. The amount you get depends on how much you were earning before you lost your job. In general, you will get about half of your average pay, up to the benefit limit. In New Mexico, unemployment checks range from $66 to $455 per week. You can also get help finding a new job or training for a new career.

How do I apply?

You may apply for unemployment insurance by phone, online, or in person. If you apply in person, go to a One Stop Career Center that is accepting paper claims. Centers accepting paper claims are located in Albuquerque, Clovis, Deming, Farmington, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, Roswell, Santa Fe, Silver City, and Taos. For more information regarding One Stop Centers, see the link to Workforce Development Centers Location and Telephone Numbers on the NMDWS E-Claims System website. If you want to apply by phone, call the NMDWS Call Center at (505) 841-4000. You may also apply online on the NMDWS E-Claims System website.

How do I collect my benefits?

If you are eligible for unemployment insurance, you will get a check once a week. The first eligible week of any new claim is a "waiting week" and you will not receive any benefits for this week. Before the NMDWS will send your check, you must file a report saying that you are ready to work and have been looking for a job that week. You must contact a minimum of two different employers each week. You must also let the NMDWS know if you are working part-time and how much money you are making. You can file your reports by phone or by using the Internet.
